Description

Scène de l'attaque de l'amiral Dupperé (navire La Provence) lors du bombardement d'Algers, le 3 juillet 1830. Scene from Admiral Dupperé's (warship La Provence) attack during the bombardment of Algiers July 3, 1830.

Between June 30 and July 4, French ships off the coast of Algiers bombarded the city, but with little effect. A company commander, Changarnier observed:
"Noisy, ridiculous shelling from the fleet which is out of range, so expending enormous quantity of ammunition to inflict six francs' worth of damage on the city's fortifications." (in Djebar, Fantasia, 30).
